State regulators have approved a proposed 200-acre solar energy facility in Buckingham County that will provide “utility-scale” solar generation.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced permit approval for the 19.8-megawatt Firestone Solar facility in Buckingham, which will be owned by Virginia Solar LLC. That’s enough to power an estimated 3,500 homes, according to solar energy industry figures.

The Richmond-based independent developer of utility-scale solar projects has principals with “extensive track records of installing thousands of megawatts of renewable energy capacity outside of Virginia,” the company’s website states.
