County Waste/Green Ridge has filed a Notice of Intent and Part A Permit Application with the Department of Environmental Quality to develop a 1200-acre Landfill in eastern Cumberland County. This Heavy Industrial Facility will have a significant impact on the residents living in eastern Cumberland and western Powhatan Counties. The Department of Environmental Quality is the state agency that is responsible for reviewing the Part A and Part B applications and will decide whether to issue the permits allowing County Waste/Green Ridge to develop Virginia’s 8th mega landfill.

DEQ has scheduled a public meeting for Wednesday March 25th at the Cumberland County Middle/High School from 7:00 to 8:30 pm.

Meeting information has been posted on DEQ’s Homepage, the Green Ridge webpage and on Town Hall (townhall.virginia.gov). Go to the Meetings tab on the townhall website to see additional details about the March 25th meeting.

According to DEQ Communication Manager Ann Regn, “At the meeting, DEQ staff will explain the requirements of new landfills, how permit applications are evaluated, and the sequence of steps in the review process. Staff will provide a brief update on the status on the Green Ridge permit application, the opportunities for public comment, and they will answer questions from the public. In addition to being able to interact in person with DEQ staff, the meeting will be an opportunity to learn about concerns other community members may have about the proposal.”

The Piedmont Regional Office (PRO) has been the lead for organizing the meeting and will be the lead for reviewing the permit application.  Direct questions to Kyle Winter, Deputy Director, DEQ Piedmont Regional Office and Shawn Weimer, Land Protection Manager (PRO).

We are hoping for a large turn-out to show that the community remains fully engaged and continues to follow, closely all developments involving the proposed landfill.
