Mayor Robert Hedlund is forming a 10-member citizen committee to monitor air quality hearings held by the state Depar tment of Environmental Protection when it reviews Spectra Energy’s plan to construct a compressor station near the Fore River.
Town Solicitor Joe Callanan said the committee is being formed to allow the town to challenge the DEP if it approves an air quality permit for Spectra to construct the compressor station.
“In some instances a town can’t enter into the hearing as a municipality,” Callanan said.
Callanan said the concerns of a 10-member citizens committee about air quality has a better chance of being considered by the DEP than a legislative body like town council.
