What kind of Commonwealth are we? September 7 Town Hall Gathering

Aug 24, 2019 | Events

You are invited to join Friends of Buckingham and the Union Hill community, along with allies across Virginia and to support communities leading the fight to protect our health, environment, and future against reckless corporate polluters for a special event and reception that will address this important question: What kind of Commonwealth are we?

Despite having permit after permit either withdrawn, or tossed out by federal courts for its disastrous, unnecessary, and harmful fracked gas Atlantic Coast Pipeline, Dominion Energy, is continuing to force its massive, toxic compressor station on Union Hill and Buckingham County, aided by regulators who have allowed corporations to profit from peoples’ suffering. But our community, like so many Virginians leading the fight against the fossil fuel industry in Virginia, are not giving up. We’re fighting the compressor station in federal court, and as our incredible allies in the Southern Environmental Law Center and Chesapeake Bay Foundation prepare for crucial oral argument on the case this October, we must be ready, and continue to lift up the voices of our communities and tell polluters and their cronies that they will not get away with putting profits before people!

At the event, you’ll hear from members of the Union Hill community, many of whom trace their ancestry to the courageous women and men who founded this historic community.  We’ll also hear remarks from experts and lead attorneys at the Southern Environmental Law Center and Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

The fight for Union Hill is part of a broader struggle for environmental justice in Virginia.  It also includes the Atlantic Coast Pipeline, the Mountain Valley Pipeline, the Chickahominy power plant, the mega dump (called “Green Ridge”) in Cumberland County and other projects that threaten vulnerable communities. As we’ve done so many times, on September 7, together, communities across the commonwealth and allies will call on our elected leaders to take meaningful action to develop sound environmental policies that leave no community behind.

Refreshments will be served immediately following the event program. More details about the event can be found here:
