VERONA – The Augusta County Board of Zoning Appeals voted to delay making a decision Thursday on whether to issue the Atlantic Coast Pipeline a special use permit for a storage yard in Churchville.
The proposal is to convert 34 acres of existing farmland on property in Churchville on the west side of Va. 42, opposite the intersection of Union Church Road and Va. 42, into a storage yard for pipeline construction materials, equipment, fuel and worker trailers. The Atlantic Coast Pipeline has an agreement in place with the owner of the property, Stanley Sheets, according to the meeting materials.
Approximately 400 pipeline workers would be going to and from the site — a figure that sent gasps throughout the room when it was uttered — with activity at least six days per week, said Ron Baker, a spokesperson for the pipeline handling construction for the project. They anticipate being off the site within two years.
