Opponents of the Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley pipelines thought they finally had an idea that Virginia legislators could support: a resolution that merely encourages the developers to use state courts instead of federal courts for land condemnation cases if the projects receive federal approval.
The answer was silence.
The nonbinding resolution circulated by Virginians for Fairness in Eminent Domain failed to get a single sponsor in the General Assembly, despite a concerted lobbying campaign of emails and phone calls from constituents.
The reason for the no-response? Jon Ansell has one word: Dominion, the Richmond-based energy giant that is lead partner in Atlantic Coast Pipeline LLC, the $5.1 billion, 600-mile natural gas pipeline proposed from West Virginia to southeastern Virginia and eastern North Carolina.
