LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: For Sunday, Aug. 6

Letter writer perpetuates ‘fake news’ to support pipeline

In the frequently published writings of Tom McDonald, one thing is consistently clear; he does not fact check his writings before submitting them, perpetuating fake news (“Pipeline opponents once championed natural gas,” The News Virginian, Letters to the Editor, Aug. 2.)

For one thing, I don’t know who Mr. McDonald is referring to when he says “the opposition” once supported natural gas, but I can say with certainty that I have never expressed support for natural gas and neither has Friends of Augusta.

For another, he continues to write that this gas will benefit our area and bring manufacturing back to the Valley. Neither Waynesboro, Staunton nor Augusta County will be getting any of this gas, period. You can fact check this by looking at  Dominion’s own website.

If you support the pipeline, then say you support the pipeline; don’t make up fake points to justify your position.  Just admit you don’t care about the environment, private property rights or the corruption of big business buying off our elected officials.

Please, Mr. McDonald, research what you are writing about.  Even Dominion disagrees with you and your “alternative facts.” Fake news like this hurts credible journalists, the truth and our democracy.
