The Louisa County Board of Supervisors (BoS) unanimously approved a motion to oppose the Joshua Falls-Yeat Electric Transmission Line Project — a 115-mile 765-kilovolt (kV) transmission line that is planned to cut through 20 miles in Louisa County — and present a resolution stating their opposition at the upcoming March 16 meeting. The line is planned to extend from Campbell to Culpeper County and across nine counties to meet Virginia’s growing energy needs.
The project is a joint venture between Dominion Energy, FirstEnergy Transmission and Transource, operating as the Valley Link Transmission Company. The expected completion date for the project is 2029 and 130,000 landowners within a mile of either side of the two proposed route corridors across nine counties potentially impacted by the project reportedly received a notice earlier in February, with others receiving them in early March.
Ultimately, the decision for the project will not be made at the local level, but at the state level by the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) which regulates utilities, insurance, financial institutions, and securities in the Commonwealth.
Green Springs District Supervisor Rachel Jones stated that she attended an informal community meeting regarding the Valley Link project at Southern Revere Cellars on March 1 where she said concerned residents were “rightfully” filled with passion, fear, and anger over the project.
“This will change the trajectory of our county; it will change the landscape of our county,” Jones said, noting past major projects in the county’s history like Interstate 64 and the North Anna Power Station that have shaped the county. “…we all use [I-64] and we couldn’t imagine living in Louisa County without I-64, but land was taken for that.”
