Northern Virginia weighs pros and cons of proposed pipeline project

Jobs, land, environmental and public health all considerations for project

CENTREVILLE, Va. – The proposed WB XPress Pipeline Project would impact West Virginia and Virginia, but two miles of new pipeline would be constructed in Western Fairfax County park land, and a compressor station would be built in Centreville.
“Since 2011, there have been 11 explosions or fires of compressor stations,” said Helene Shore, Co-Chair 350 Fairfax.
Activists, like Shore, are upset the pipeline would run through park land, and the compressor station would be near an elementary school and homes.
“These compressor stations are extremely safe. Since 2002, (when data on incidents started being formally collected) there are no reported incidents of a member of the public being injured by a compressor station,” said Scott Castleman, Spokesman, Transcanada — the company in charge of the pipeline project.
Experts agree that proximity to schools and homes is important when choosing a site for a compressor station, but how close is too close?
A University of Albany researcher published a study that confirmed the air around homes near natural gas drilling wells and production equipment in five states had potentially carcinogenic levels of chemical.
