How do you effectively monitor a Virginia gold mining operation without necessary resources or staff? A question awaiting an answer in Buckingham and other localities. This problem is… part of the regulation and enforcement falls to local governments… without the capacity to do so. Why are there no fines? If the state can shut down a mine – has it actually done so?
Brian Carlton, the new Farmville Herald Editor, made compelling observations and questions about the last State Agency Meeting on the state study of gold mining held in Dillwyn at the Buckingham County Community Center on Friday, August 26, 9-Noon. The next 2 meetings will be: Monday September 26 from 9 am – noon.
Tuesday October 18 from 9 am – noon. Venue TBD.
The Virginia Energy – Mineral Mining – Gold Study page has recordings of past meetings and updates on upcoming meetings. Please make your comments public on the Virginia Regulatory Town Hall page for the gold mining study here.
